About this event
A number of Seattle artists with connections to Japan had the same idea at the same time. What can we do to aid recovery efforts from the devastation from last week’s earthquake and tsunami? The greatest asset we have to contribute is our work, and with your help, we can convert that artwork into the most versatile asset – money to support relief efforts.

All the artwork – paintings, drawings, calligraphy, sumi-e, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, prints, and more – has been donated. No commissions are being paid, and all the hard costs for the event have been donated.

How it Works
This event is offered in the spirit of generosity and trust. Instead of purchasing the artwork, guests will have the opportunity to make a donation in the amount of that “price” directly to the International Red Cross in exchange for the work. Donations can be made by only by credit card or check. (Some employers will match your donations, check your company policies on matching donations.) Everybody wins.

Habitat for Humanity – Seattle/South King County has again invited AWB for Build Days at one of their construction sites. This time around, we’ll be renovating three 1970′s era single family homes in Kent, Washington. The work may entail a wide range of activities – from replacing exterior siding and windows to interior painting and hardware installation. Every skill level will be welcomed and no prior experience is required.

Two consectutive Build Days are scheduled: Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9, 2011. The work hours will be 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. We would like to have 12 to 15 volunteers for each day.

If you are interested in signing up or want more information, please contact Kalman Axelrod at kaxelrod@live.com.

If you would like more general information about Habitat, you can find it on their website: www.seattle-habitat.org.

This is a great opportunity to make a fast tangible contribution to the community, to families working hard to improve their own lives. And along the way, you may learn some new construction skills that could come in handy. We hope to see you out there.

What: Informal Urbanism: Slum Cities and Global Health. A discussion with Melanie Walker (Gates Foundation), Celine d’Cruz (Slum Dwellers International), and Richard Goethert (SIGUS, Massachusetts Institute of Technology)
When: Thursday, January 13th at 6:30pm
Where: 120 Kane Hall on the University of Washington Campus

By 2030 nearly 2 billion people will live in informal urban settlements or slums. Although living in abject poverty, slum communities are resilient and create new forms of urbanism. This panel will discuss current work in slums throughout the world, considering issues of empowerment and social equity, environmental sustainability, economic development and human health. These discussions will be both speculative and reflective, stimulating critical inquiry and interdisciplinary dialogue into how concerted efforts can transform informal communities to improve the health of those living within them and guide future development of cities worldwide.
