ABOUT THIS PROJECT
The Everest Sanitation Alliance, an unofficial partnership between AWBS, Do Good Sh*t, and local champion Tenzing Sherpa, has designed a composting toilet facility for Phortse, Nepal. Construction of this prototype is nearly complete and we are looking forward to evaluating the building and the waste management system for potential use at several dozen other sites along the Everest Base Camp Trek.
In Phortse, at an elevation of around 12,000 ft, Tenzing led a team of extraordinarily talented construction workers who lived at the jobsite for several weeks and did practically all the work by hand: mixing concrete and bending rebar, planing lumber, and fashioning doors, plumbing the waste diversion system and installing the toilet, etc. Cold winter temperatures halted the work in late 2021, but when weather allows this year the exterior plaster will be applied, the composting toilet system hooked up and the facility opened for use.
